Child growth and development

The child growth and development focuses on the growth and development of preschool children. Preschool children, in the 3-5 years range, are at a time in their life when their motor skills, language, thinking, and social development are changing rapidly. While it's important to understand that each child is different, this is an overview of what to expect at these ages.

Improve Motor Development

By this age, children will be able to work similarly to an adult and be fairly agile in their movements. Their hand-eye coordination will be good. They will begin to be more independent and adventurous in their movements. Fine motor skills are also being developed. They will be able to assemble small puzzles, finger paint, draw simple shapes, and stack blocks. These are all normal skills for this age range.

Language and Thinking

Parents may be surprised to learn that by age 3, children will understand most of what they are saying. While their own sentences may not always be coherent, preschool children will be speaking in short sentences, usually three to five words long. They begin to understand the concept of time and are able to understand concepts like now and later. Also, they are starting to understand cause and effect, making it easier for parents to explain consequences.

Emotion

By ages 3-5, preschool children will be able to follow simple directions. This is a great time for parents to get their kids involved in simple household chores and tasks, which also help to develop emotional development. They will also feel more comfortable asking for help during these ages, but develop a sense of independence. Many times they do not feel the need to share and prefer playing alone, although usually near other children.

Tips for Parents of Preschool Children
Parents are a huge part their child growth and development. The children are starting to explore their world in this age. This is an age when they get into everything, so safety is important, but try not to discourage curiosity. Make a point to find learning experiences every day. Pointing out colors and shapes of even everyday objects helps children to make connections in their mind.

At this age, they are also remarkably sensory. Look for games that are hands-on and have new textures available. Finger painting is very popular, and can help with fine motor skills as well as helping them understand colors and shapes. Games that have matching and similar skills are great for this age range, as they are just starting to recognize and be able to separate patterns and shapes.

Being a parent, especially a first time parent, can be difficult at this age. As children are beginning to develop and grow more independent, it's hard to know how to let them be independent while still being present. The best parenting advice is to be a model good behavior. Make a point to follow good habits, whether it's not watching television at dinner, or spending time doing chores each day. They pick up on these habits at an early age and begin to see them as normal. Even without pointing out good habits, preschool children will observe and remember them.

This is some basic information on what to expect from a 3-5 year old. Preschool children are just starting to explore their world at this age, making it important for cognitive, emotional, and motor development.
