Vitamin D helps to reduce diabetes risk in obese kids!

Recent informative news is that Vitamin D may lower diabetes risk in obese kids which is a recent article in The Indian Express. Obesity in children puts them to greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. According to University of Missouri researchers studies, 35 pre-diabetic obese children and adolescents were undergoing treatment in MU Adolescent Diabetic Obesity Programme.

The scientists had told in the article that Vitamin D supplements help obese kids and adolescents control their blood sugar levels which helps stave off diabetes.

Catherine Peterson, an associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology at MU  told “By increasing vitamin D intake alone, we got a response that was nearly as powerful as what we have seen using a prescription drug”. Peterson had told that they saw a decrease in insulin levels, which means better glucose control, despite no changes in body weight, dietary intake or physical activity.

When the children are given supplements they get sufficient vitamin D and the amount of insulin in their blood is lowered.  Peterson said, "The vitamin D dosage we gave to the obese adolescents in our study is not something I would recommend for everyone”. Also Vitamin D helps to maintain healthy bones, muscles and nerves.  Our body gets vitamin D not only through diet or supplements also through body exposure in sunlight.

Peterson said that Vitamin D deficiency is common; however it can be harmful to obese people. Also he said “What makes vitamin D insufficiency different in obese individuals is that they process vitamin D about half as efficiently as normal-weight people".

So Peterson said, “Obese children and teens are advised to take vitamin D food to lower the chance of developing diabetes and avoid the side effects that might come from taking medicines to control their blood sugar”. The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Does the Constant Use of Electronic Gadgets Create Speech Problem in Kids?

Unlimited uses of electronic gadgets is creating speech problem in kids. Experts suggest keeping kids away from these gadgets. The experts are also discussing other effects of using these gadgets.

Recently visited the tech site of Times of India where news about latest electronic gadget discovery and its pros and cons is published. Last week gadget critics has discussed here in the site how excessive uses of electronic gadgets, especially the touch screen type-gadgets, are creating speech problem in the  UK-based kids in huge number.

According to those critics, near about 70% kids in the UK are suffering from speech problem and in last six years, the problem has increased in rapid rate. At present, near about 1.2 million British kids suffer from this difficulty and majority of them are admitted in schools to cure speech inefficiency, as these kids cannot join sentences together.

Growing uses of touch screen type electronic gadgets is being considered as the cause of this increasing problem. These gadgets are often used to keep kids engage when parents do not have time to play with the kid. Daily Mail reports that working parents use these gadgets more than the others do and their kids often become speech inefficient.

A study show, funded by state Government, reported recently that number of school going kids that need help from experts to develop language difficulties and speech problems have increased up to 70% within 2005 to 11.

A report from another childcare organization in the UK “I Can” says that 1.2 million of UK people, belonging to all ages, are suffering from communication problem.

Other major reason that causes speech inefficiency in kids is social disadvantage and polluted environment.  Near about 50% of the total 1.2 million, join school late because these kids do not start speaking at normal timing.

Language and speech tsar on behalf of government and one of the “I Can” trustees, Jean Gross gave another data that percentage of speech problem in kids was supposed to go down within 21st century as the states authority took plan to educate parents and school authorities about the affect of  using touch screen type electronic gadgets. However, the number has increased rather than going down and it is expected that if measures are not taken right now, it will be difficult to overcome the problem in future.

She warned to stop using screen based gadgets like computers, game consoles, Smart phones and Touch TVs. Rather parents should take initiative to engage kids in family activities like learning nursery rhymes or playing games together.

She said in a speech that, “Head teachers are telling me they are seeing a real increase in the number of children who struggle to string words together,"

Head teachers from different schools reported her that they are noticing problem in kids that struggle to join words together.

I would suggest readers to visit The Times Of India. When we have enough knowledge about these issues we can decide easily what is good or bad for our kids.

Babies To Be Left Cry or Not; The Psychologists Suggest

While reading “The Telegraph”, I came across news by Medial Correspondent, Stephen Adams that aroused my interest and I am sure others would think so. Psychologists have come up with a new experiment with babies. They say that if a baby is laid crying, chances are there that it sleeps well at night. Here is given a description about the news.

Psychologists’ view for babies:

Academics said to have proven that a baby who is left crying for sleeping is a good way to be sure that he/she sleeps well at night.

According to American psychologists - By six months, most of the babies sleep 5 or 6 nights in a week. However, 1/3rd of the babies remain awake frequently till they reach adolescent period. They experimented on one thousand and two hundred children in sleeping patterns since birth to 3 years and came up with the news that wakers are mostly male children. In addition, it came into notice that those children are breast-fed.
Marsha Weinraub (Psychology professor in Temple University, Philadelphia) led the research. She is of the view that babies sleep of themselves even if they cry for some time. She added if the babies are left with themselves, they learn the process to settle and feel comfortable. She said that it gives break to their exhausted parents.

She argued that the data supports those practices by parents who leave their children to themselves without holding and nursing. Further, she said that those children learn comforting themselves. However, she contradicted her point saying that it is difficult for some babies and their parents as well.
She said further that if parents desired their children to sleep through night then they should be allowed to sleep even after they awake. This might require parents not to listen to their cries especially after 9 or 10 months of their age. She continued that if parents are aware that their children are safer and simply required sleeping assistance then it is better to let them do it on their own.

She is of the viewpoint that the infants need to be placed regularly at bedtime and let them sleep without any assistance and control on responding immediately to their awakenings. If mothers respond to their children awakenings or making them asleep by breastfeeding then it can be difficult for the child to learn self-soothing, which can, in turn, be problematic for daily sleep.

As per the experiment – babies who remain awaken had created issues not only for mother but for all family members. This might encourage parents to setup strict rules to assist their toddlers to soothe themselves.
When writing for the Journal in Developmental Psychology, Weinraub along with other team members claimed that moms of those babies remaining awake persistently are more depressed. Even the babies were found irritable than ever. Despite she admitted that the research work were unable to clarify effect and cause of the relationship.

Research work of Prof. Weinraub goes similarly to baby guru like Gina Ford who has written “The New Contended Little Book”. In the book, Ford advocated rigid approach relating to bedtimes that included – let babies settle themselves alone with techniques called ‘no eye contact’ and ‘controlled crying’. With such comments, Ford has been criticized frequently as unloving. Critics also pointed her as nurse for maternal issues who personally is not a mother.

However, the DPM of Britain, Nick Clegg admired her methods as a kind of manual instruction for children. For the same reason, he has been rebuked by Ford and she said that it sad those words came from an intellectual personality.

Opponents are of the view that leaving babies up to themselves crying and sleeping is a kind of negligence. They said that it can result in psychological damage for the long-term. Penelope Leach in the same year wrote a book “The essential First Year” in which a line is quoted "It is potentially damaging to leave babies to cry." She supports the same idea that babies, if left in their own ways can lead to a major problem.
According to her – if babies are left on their own to sleep and cry then it can have long-term impacts on their minds. Even she added that it can generate good amount of stress, which after a certain period can become toxic to human brains as per neurobiologists.

Either debates or arguments whatever be considered is not likely to be end sooner. NHS therefore advices for errs rather crying in a controlled manner. The website of NHS states that parents should leave their children for 5 to ten minutes regularly to make them sleep on their own. They even said that the process may require 1 or 2 weeks but make babies learn to sleep themselves.
The website also proposes that husband and wife should deal with the issue together on how to deal with their child’s sleeping issues. It said that if both husband and wife agree the best for their child then it would be simple to implement the plan.

Learning and Summary:

There are numerous views on whether to leave babies on their own or not. However, most of the experts have similarly said that babies need to be left on themselves. It would make them self-soothing and comfortable. It is true that babies need to be given a space but sometimes it can have negative impact on them mentally according to neurobiologists. So, it needs to be decided personally by parents what to do and what not.

Child growth and development

The child growth and development focuses on the growth and development of preschool children. Preschool children, in the 3-5 years range, are at a time in their life when their motor skills, language, thinking, and social development are changing rapidly. While it's important to understand that each child is different, this is an overview of what to expect at these ages.

Improve Motor Development

By this age, children will be able to work similarly to an adult and be fairly agile in their movements. Their hand-eye coordination will be good. They will begin to be more independent and adventurous in their movements. Fine motor skills are also being developed. They will be able to assemble small puzzles, finger paint, draw simple shapes, and stack blocks. These are all normal skills for this age range.

Language and Thinking

Parents may be surprised to learn that by age 3, children will understand most of what they are saying. While their own sentences may not always be coherent, preschool children will be speaking in short sentences, usually three to five words long. They begin to understand the concept of time and are able to understand concepts like now and later. Also, they are starting to understand cause and effect, making it easier for parents to explain consequences.

Emotion

By ages 3-5, preschool children will be able to follow simple directions. This is a great time for parents to get their kids involved in simple household chores and tasks, which also help to develop emotional development. They will also feel more comfortable asking for help during these ages, but develop a sense of independence. Many times they do not feel the need to share and prefer playing alone, although usually near other children.

Tips for Parents of Preschool Children
Parents are a huge part their child growth and development. The children are starting to explore their world in this age. This is an age when they get into everything, so safety is important, but try not to discourage curiosity. Make a point to find learning experiences every day. Pointing out colors and shapes of even everyday objects helps children to make connections in their mind.

At this age, they are also remarkably sensory. Look for games that are hands-on and have new textures available. Finger painting is very popular, and can help with fine motor skills as well as helping them understand colors and shapes. Games that have matching and similar skills are great for this age range, as they are just starting to recognize and be able to separate patterns and shapes.

Being a parent, especially a first time parent, can be difficult at this age. As children are beginning to develop and grow more independent, it's hard to know how to let them be independent while still being present. The best parenting advice is to be a model good behavior. Make a point to follow good habits, whether it's not watching television at dinner, or spending time doing chores each day. They pick up on these habits at an early age and begin to see them as normal. Even without pointing out good habits, preschool children will observe and remember them.

This is some basic information on what to expect from a 3-5 year old. Preschool children are just starting to explore their world at this age, making it important for cognitive, emotional, and motor development.

Toddlers behavior and development

You need to understand toddlers behaviors and development stages in order to monitor the progress of your child. Your child officially becomes a toddler when he learns to walk. Typically, a toddler is a child between one to three years old. This is a very crucial stage in life and everything happening to your child should be observed closely. Here is a step-by-step look at the toddlers behavior and developmental stages.

 One year old babies:

Physical development and behavior:
This is the stage when the toddler tends to eat less. However, he will eat several times during the day. He will learn to feed by himself, although you can expect a lot of spills on the table or floor. The toddler may not grow as fast as he did during infancy; however, he should learn to walk with limited support by his 14th month and backward by his 22nd month. He should be able to scribble, stack blocks and even drink from a cup with minimal help.

 Social and emotional behavior:
Expect plenty of tempers and tantrums. The child is very possessive, not willing to share his toys with the other children. He is trying to be independent, thus desiring to do things on his own even when he is not sticking to the rules. The mood shift is quite rapid at this stage, with short lived but intense emotions. The child's self-awareness is on the rise and he is constantly asking for mom and dad. Finally, emotions like jealousy, pride and even shame begins to show up.

 Intellectual development and behavior:
This is the stage when the toddler begins to identify and name people and objects that he is familiar with. He is very curious, with a short attention span. If there is a pet at home, then it should not surprise you when your little one begins to imitate its sound. He should also be able to form simple two to three word sentences.

 Two year olds:

Physical behavior and development:
At this stage, you can expect your toddler to stand up without support. He can also move around throwing and kicking his ball. Expect your child to express interest in toilet training at this stage. Also, he should be able to dismantle and assemble simple structures back together. This is the stage when the toddler is overly active, running and jumping around from point to point. He is very prone to accidents at this stage.

Social behavior and development:
The toddler begins to assert himself by crying and saying "NO" quite often. He loves imitating grownups and giving a hand with household chores. He can play simple but brief fantasy games. He enjoys playing around other children as long as he does not have to share his toys with them.

 Intellectual behavior and development:
The toddler can clearly express his feelings and wishes. He can also follow simple instructions. Although his attention span is still limited, he can easily construct simple sentences. He can also memorize and sing simple songs.

It is important to note that every child is unique and the developmental progress and behavior do vary from child to child. You may not notice some developmental milestones in your child; however, understanding toddlers behaviors and development stages will help you monitor the progress of your child while looking out for any abnormality.
