Aware of summer diseases

In summer there are many diseases which harm kids easily.  It is necessary to know about the summer diseases .

Chickenpox:
Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella-Zoster  Virus (VZV).  It is a common disease spreads among kids especially in summer. Blisters, which resemble the peck marks of a chicken, appear all over the body
accompanied by flu like symptoms. It is very contagious. So the infected children should be isolated and given a rest. It takes 10 days to recover.

Symptoms:
The symptoms are fever, headache and sore throat. In one or two days a red itchy skin rash usually appears first on the abdomen, back and face and spreads almost to the entire body. The blisters burst after 2 days. Recovery from illness takes about 10 days.

Mumps:
Mumps is an extremely contagious viral disease. It occurs in children during peak hot summer. It is caused by the mumps virus.

Symptoms:
Initial symptoms are fever, headache, tiredness, muscle ache and loss of appetite which is followed by swelling of salivary glands. The duration for recovery from the disease is 10 days.

Measles:
Measles is also called rubeola or morbilli which is caused by the Paramyxo virus. It spreads easily from one person to person.

Symptoms:
The initial symptoms are high fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat and red eyes. The measles rashes
 ( small red spots)  appear 3 to 5 days after the initial symptoms. The rashes often start on the head and moves down the body.

Jaundice:
Jaundice is a disease spread by the Hepatitis A virus. It is a yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes, light colored stools, dark colored urine and itching of the skin.
It affects the liver which caused by the over production of bile.

Symptoms:
The symptoms starts from fever, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, head and weakness followed by the above said yellow discoloration of the skin.

Typhoid:
Typhoid is characterized by typical course of temperature and ulceration of the bowels. It is a water borne disease. It is caused by bacteria called Salmonella typhi.

Symptoms:
The symptoms are high fever, tiredness, weakness, headache, backache, loss of appetite, diarrhea.
Skin eruptions appear; tongue becomes dry and gets white patches in the centre.
